Flagpoling at Canadian Borders Resumes | COVID-19 Update

Work Permit, Study Permit and Confirmation of Permanent Residence Requests

Up until now, candidates in the process of applying for Canadian Permanent Residency could not validate their status at the Canadian border due to travel restrictions and closures as a result of COVID-19.

This practise is commonly referred to as ‘flagpoling’. It’s not only used by applicants for Canadian Permanent Residence but also by individuals seeking to renew study permits and work permits.

Previously, travel for the purpose of collecting immigration documentation was considered non-essential and was prohibited. CBSA has now stated they will allow this.

What This Means for You

  • Applicants who applied from in Canada for temporary permits, such as a work permit or study permit, that are approved are allowed to validate their permits at the border.

  • Applicants who applied for out of Canada Permanent Residency will be able to complete their landings at the border.

  • Those who can apply at the border for certain permits will now be able to do so.

What You Should Know

If you plan to confirm your status at a Canadian land border, you should check the hours of operation at the port of entry in advance. Immigration services are only offered on specific days and at specific times.

For study permit and work permit requests, applicants should know that even during the scheduled hours, some applications may not be processed due to high volumes and excessive wait times. You may be invited to apply online or make an appointment with IRCC from within Canada.
