Breaking News - Public Policy Extended, Allowing All Visitors In Canada To Apply For A Work Permit Until Feb 2023: COVID-19 Program Delivery
In August 2020, the IRCC released a temporary COVID-19 policy that allowed temporary visitors in Canada to apply for a work permit.
On the 1st of March 2022, the IRCC announced that they will be extending this public policy until February 28, 2023. Normally, foreign visitors who are on temporary status in Canada are unable to change their status unless they leave the country.
What does this mean?
If you are in Canada with a visitor visa, you will be able to apply for an employer-specific work permit and stay in Canada while you wait for your permit to be processed.
The benefit here will be significant because foreign workers with long processing times in their home countries will be able to shorten the wait time by staying in Canada.
You will be able to enter Canada with a visitor visa and apply for an employer-specific work permit, regardless of when you arrived in Canada. You will also be able to stay in your immigration status, meaning if you are a visitor who has applied for a work permit, you can stay and wait in Canada even if your visitor status has expired, this status is called maintained status.
For applicants who were hoping to apply through the Express Entry system, this route can be a great alternative for them to consider in their Canadian immigration planning.
Eligibility requirements:
In order to be eligible to apply for a work permit from inside Canada, you must:
be in Canada;
have submitted an employer-specific work permit application using the Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Worker [IMM 5710];
have stayed in Canada with status since submitting the application;
submit the application before February 28, 2023.
