Get to Know the Face Behind Calver and Associates: Meet Jade

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background in Canadian Immigration Law.

I’ve worked in both the public and private spheres in the Immigration sector. I started off my career working for Immigration Canada, in the citizenship department. I worked on citizenship files and administered citizenship exams and ceremonies. Later, I worked with Campbell Cohen, which is a large Immigration Law firm in Montreal working on Federal and Quebec applications, and later in their business immigration department. After my time there, I worked at the Immigration and Refugee Board first as an Immigration Hearing Assistant, and later as a Scheduling Officer, I worked in each Division of the Board providing support in the tribunal. After my time at the IRB, I returned to school and I completed a graduate program at the University of British Columbia in Immigration Policy and Procedures, from there I passed my regulatory exams that allowed to set up my own practice. I’ve been practising in the Durham region for over three years, and I’ve worked in the industry for 10 years.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

My typical day varies but generally, it consists of a mixture of clients meeting and casework. I like to take time with my clients to understand their case completely so that I can provide the best advice and solutions for their Canadian Immigration cases.

What is your favourite part of owning your own business?

Immigration as an area of practice is very diverse unto itself. With family sponsorship cases, I get to help reunite spouses and families in Canada. With business immigration, I get to help new businesses flourish in Canada. Everyone that I help is here to contribute to Canadian society in their own way, and I think that’s what I love about owning this business.

What do most clients ask you for help with?

Most clients need help determining which Immigration program is right for them. Some clients are here already in Canada, and some have never been to the country before. They seek my advice so that I can inform them about the various programs that exist, and so that I help them navigate the system once we determine the best course of action for their individual case.

What would you like people to know about the immigration process?

The immigration process is often long and challenging. This, coupled with the fact that Immigration policy is always changing makes it a difficult system to navigate on one’s own.

What makes you different from an immigration lawyer?

I am regulated by the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council, my educational background is uniquely in Canadian Immigration Law, whereas lawyers study all areas of the law during their education. Other than this, consultants generally provide the same services, at a slightly lower cost to their clients.
