INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE CANADA - NEW AGE FOR AUSTRALIANS

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

NEW AGE FOR AUSTRALIANS PARTICIPATING INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE CANADA PROGRAM

Canada and Australia have recently amended the youth mobility agreement for the International Experience Canada (IEC) program. Previously, the program was only available to those between the ages of 18 and 30. Starting November 1, 2018, those between the ages of 18 and 35 (inclusive) will be eligible to apply. This gives more opportunities to Australians interested in working in and visiting Canada.

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program offers young citizens the opportunity to travel and work in Canada for a set period of time, ranging from six to 24 months (depending on the participant’s country of origin). This program allows individuals to enter Canada through one of three streams: Working Holiday, Young Professional, or International Co-op Internship.

AUSTRALIANS WHO WANT TO TRAVEL TO CANADA

Are you an Australian citizen interested in working and studying in Canada? One of the most popular categories for IEC is the Working Holiday. Australians entering Canada on a Working Holiday visa through the International Experience Canada program can spend up to 24 months in the country.

CANADIANS WHO WANT TO TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA

Are you a Canadian citizen interested in working and staying in Australia? You can stay and work in Australia for up to 12 months. You may also be eligible to participate in Australia’s Working Holiday program up to two times.

Are you eligible to work in Australia? To work in Australia through the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417), you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen

  • Be 18-30 years old (35 years old, starting November 1st, 2018)

  • Have a valid Canadian passport

"I am pleased that we have agreed to amend this MoU with Australia and further strengthen the great relationship between our two countries. International travel and work allows our youth to immerse themselves in a different culture and develop life skills, all while improving their employability back home. This expanded age range will give more young adults from Canada and Australia the opportunity to broaden their perspective of the world and gain professional work experience while traveling."

 – The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
