Why are Immigration Applications Taking so Long During COVID-19

Updated: Dec 17, 2020

Many people who have applied for temporary or permanent residence in Canada are wondering why their immigration application is taking so long during COVID-19. Immigration applications are exceeding the posted processing times on the IRCC processing time calculator and we’ve received many questions about what applications IRCC is still processing, including:

  • Is Canada processing visitor visas?

  • Is Canada processing citizenship applications?

  • Is Canada processing work permits?

  • Is Canada processing student visas?

  • Is Canada processing PR applications?

Jade reviews these questions in a NEW video!

Why are immigration applications taking so long during covid 19?

IRCC’s ability to process applications has been affected by COVID-19. Many visa offices were closed earlier this year and some offered reduced services. As a result, there is now a backlog of applications that is causing a delay in processing. Visa officers are working through submitted applications and IRCC is accepting new applications. However, delays are to be expected.

How long will my application take?

IRCC has a processing time calculator but they have stated that the estimates are not accurate at this time. You can refer to the calculator for a rough estimate but you should be prepared for your application to exceed the posted processing time.

Here is a summary of the application processing times during COVID-19:

  • Express Entry (In-Canada): 6-8 months

  • Express Entry (Out of Canada): 12+ months

  • Work Permit: Normal processing times according to country-specific Visa Application Centres

  • LMIAs: Normal processing time, as listed on the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) website

  • Spousal Sponsorship: 12+ months

My application is still under review and exceeded processing time. What should I do?

If your application has exceeded the processing time posted on IRCC’s processing time calculator, you can submit a WebForm to inquire about the status of your application. You need to include all of the relevant information about your application so that the form is sent to the appropriate office.
