FAMILY SPONSORSHIP | THE UNDERTAKING

Updated: May 11, 2020

An undertaking is a promise of support that you sign as a sponsor with the Canadian government. It is a promise of financial support that indicates you will take care of whomever you’re sponsoring for a specific amount of time.

As a sponsor, it’s important to understand what you’re promising because this undertaking applies for a set period of time. Even in extenuating cases where spouses get divorced, or the sponsor falls into financial trouble, they are still responsible for the undertaking. As such, this commitment is very serious and should be given appropriate consideration.

Today, Jade explains how long the sponsor is responsible for the person their family member once they arrive in Canada.
