The Government of Canada Introduces Integration Services for LGBTQ+ Refugees
The government of Canada renewed a cost-sharing agreement with the Rainbow Refugee Society until March 31, 2020. As of April 1, 2018, additional funding of $100,000 will be made available to support refugees sponsored under the Rainbow Refugee Assistance Pilot.
What is the rainbow refugee society?
The Rainbow Refugee Society is a community group, based in Vancouver. The group supports people seeking refugee protection in Canada because of persecution based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or HIV status.
Why make this change?
According to the Independent, LGBT relationships are illegal in 74 countries. Some of these countries include Iran and Syria – two of the top ten countries of birth of recent immigrants. The government of Canada aims to support those individuals who are discriminated against for their sexual and gender identity. This initiative is truly fundamental in helping the lives of those facing criminal charges for self-expression.
How does the Rainbow Refugee Society help immigrants and refugees?
The funding provided by the government for this initiative supports the initial costs refugees face upon arriving in Canada. This includes money to buy clothing, basic household items, and food. The initiative also provides privately sponsored refugees with three months of income support for their first year in Canada (private sponsors provide the remaining nine months).
