The Government of Canada held two Express Entry draws in July. On July 10th, 2019, 3,600 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) were issued and the cut-off score was 460 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. The second draw was held on July 24th, 2019 and saw 3,600 ITAs issued with a cut-off score of 459 CRS points.
Both draws held this month issued more ITAs than in June and with lower CRS scores. This is great news for Express Entry candidates who were not previously deemed competitive. This trend could also be explained by the consistent 2-week intervals between draws that IRCC has maintained since May 2019.
At this point in 2019, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued a total of 49,000 ITAs to Express Entry applicants.

Cumulatively, more ITAs have been issued in the first half of 2019 than were issued in the first half of 2018. By the end of June 2018, 39,700 ITAs were issued to eligible candidates. By the end of June 2019, 41,800 ITAs were issued to candidates. The Express Entry system continues to meet the goals outlined in the Express Entry target for 2019, due to a high number of ITAs issued at the start of the year.
EXPRESS ENTRY TARGET FOR 2019
According to Canada’s new immigration plan, almost a quarter of those coming to Canada will do so through one of the three economic immigration classes managed by the Express Entry system. Economic immigration is one of the largest targets as a whole. As such, some key streams of entry are through the Provincial Nominee Program and include the Federal Skilled Worker Class, the Federal Skilled Trades Class, and the Business Stream. In 2019, the Government of Canada aims to admit 330,800 immigrants.
WHAT IS AN EXPRESS ENTRY PROFILE?
Candidates must create an Express Entry profile online where they enter information about their skills, education, language ability, work experience, and more. Candidates are then assigned a CRS score out of 1200 points. Every two to three weeks, the Canadian government will conduct an Express Entry draw where applicants with the highest CRS score receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. Those who are extended an ITA have 90 days to complete an application.
HOW ARE CRS POINTS CALCULATED?
Prospective immigrants are then ranked in a point system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Points are given for each piece of information in your Express Entry profile. Some different factors that play into your CRS score include your age, level of education, English and French language proficiency, work experience, and connections to Canada (e.g. education, work experience, siblings, etc.). The number of points allotted for each factor differs if you have a spouse or common-law partner or not.
HOW CAN I INCREASE MY CRS SCORE?
If you have a spouse/common-law partner, brother, or sister living as a citizen or permanent resident in Canada, be sure to prove your relationship. This will increase your CRS score by 15 points. Further, your spouse may be able to earn you more points by taking an educational credential assessment and/or taking a language test.
Improve your English language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) and retake your IELTS to achieve a higher score. The higher your Canadian Language Benchmark level, the more CRS points you can acquire.
Gain transferable skills by working before coming to Canada.
Improve your education. Programs as short as one year in length can increase your CRS score by 84-90 points.
Determine if you are eligible to participate in a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This can increase your CRS score by 600 points.
