New Visa Application Centres Open in Asia-Pacific, the Americas, Europe, and Africa

Earlier this year, the Government of Canada announced plans to expand its biometrics program. Now, anyone who applies for a visitor visa, work permit, study permit, permanent residence, or refugee or asylum status must submit fingerprints and photographs with their documents. The initial announcement for the biometrics program stated that changes would be implemented in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa before other regions.

Canada Puts Restrictions on ‘Flagpoling’ at Some Border Crossings

According to an article published by the Toronto Star, the Canadian government plans to restrict ‘flagpoling’ at a number of Canadian borders. Last summer, a pilot project was implemented at the Rainbow, Queenston-Lewiston, and Peace bridges. The project has since expanded to include the Quebec border crossings Lacolle and St-Armand.

Improved Francophone Immigrant Services at Pearson Airport

According to the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the government has plans to improve services for francophone immigrants arriving in Canada at the Pearson International Airport in Toronto. Of the 90,300 permanent residents that landed at Pearson International Airport in 2017, approximately 2,100 were French-speaking newcomers. In order to support these francophone immigrants, the government has plans to implement reception services starting in fall of 2018.

Biometrics Requirements - Changes Summer 2018

Changes to the biometrics requirements will be enforced gradually throughout the year. This change initially affects applicants from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. By December 31st, 2018, applicants from other regions, such as Asia, Asia Pacific, and the Americas will also be required to provide their biometrics.
